Chapter Fourteen

Twenty minutes later she was on the road, and in another fifteen she was parked in front of Kirby’s apartment. To her delight, Kirby’s Jeep was already there.

“Hi,” Kirby said as she opened the door. Sam folded into her arms, her troubles slipping away as Kirby’s arms wrapped around her. The hug was warm, and comforting, but as Kirby’s hands snaked under her shirt, it quickly became heated. The first touch of their lips was sizzling, and Sam wasn’t sure how her wobbly legs carried her to the bedroom, but as soon as they were near the bed, they fell into it. They undressed themselves and each other, touched and kissed and licked and sucked until they finally fell onto the pillow together, panting and sated.

“Can I ask you a question?” Kirby asked a little while later.

“Is it about food?”

“Mm. Yes, as a matter of fact.”

“Perfect. I brought Stookey’s.”

“You’re sweet. Thank you. That solves that problem.”

“What’s your question?”

“What do I have to do to score some food?”

Relieved, Sam sat up, looking around. “I have a bag here somewhere.”

“The hallway,” Kirby reminded her.

Sam stood and pulled on her T-shirt, then found the food she’d abandoned on the floor. “Where would you like to eat?” she called out to Kirby, who was still in the bedroom.

“The kitchen, I guess,” she said as she emerged, still naked. “Or would you like to go over to the park? It’s really nice outside. We can take our gloves and throw the ball around.”

Sam didn’t have to think twice. “The park sounds great,” she said, dropping the bag again as she approached Kirby. Wrapping her arms around her, she kissed her lips softly. “But you should probably put some clothes on.”

“I don’t know what it is about you that makes me want to be naked all the time.”

“That’s funny. I’m having the same problem.” Sam patted Kirby’s butt and walked back toward the bedroom, and a minute later they were dressed. Kirby produced two bottles of Snapple from the fridge, and they walked the few blocks to the park beside the Susquehanna, talking about the lovely architecture in South Wilkes-Barre. Wilkes University was buying up much of the neighborhood and restoring some of the decaying properties, repurposing old homes into administrative buildings. The effect was a tasteful blend of historical and modern, aesthetic and functional.

At River Street they crossed and found the park almost empty. With finals past, the dorm students had gone home, and it was too late in the day for staff and faculty to be at the park. Someone was playing with their dog, and an older woman was reading on a bench, but otherwise, they had the place to themselves.

They sat on the ground beneath a tree, and Kirby leaned against it with her food in her lap, while Sam sat opposite her, with her legs crossed. Kirby moaned at the first bite of the sandwich, and Sam’s laugh broke the ice.

“Oh, man. This is so good.”

“You’re pretty easy, you know that?”

“It’s even good cold.
